Elijah’s role as a “fake husband” comes with its complications, but the story treats his choices thoughtfully. For a novella, the story packs a lot of emotional punch and manages to give both characters satisfying arcs despite the shorter length.

Because the book is under 40,000 words, some plot points and emotional beats wrap up quickly. I wanted a bit more time to see how Elijah and Colby’s relationship might evolve beyond the immediate story. Elijah’s willingness to set aside his PhD plans and dive headfirst into a new life felt a little too easy, which slightly challenged my suspension of disbelief. The focus is firmly on Elijah and Colby, which is lovely, but I did miss some richer context or supporting cast to deepen the world and add texture to their lives.

This is a perfect read for anyone who enjoys fake relationship romances with a tender, emotional core and respectful handling of grief. It’s a low-drama, character-driven novella with authentic, slow-burn heat and a feel-good summer vibe with depth and heart.

This book was a fun surprise! Nero, the stoic orca shifter bounty hunter, is the ultimate grump—and I loved watching him slowly unravel thanks to Felix, the brilliant, snarky hacker who suddenly finds himself part of a shifter world he never expected. Their dynamic is sweet, full of banter and awkward tension, and honestly kind of adorable.

The plot had great pacing, balancing action and shifter-world intrigue with relationship development. I especially loved the found family vibes from Nero’s team—the camaraderie, protectiveness, and dry humor made the book feel like a cozy supernatural heist movie.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I wanted more heat or emotional punch in the romance. Their bond was clear, but the chemistry sometimes felt soft when I was craving a little more spark or angst.

Still, this was such a fun read with a unique shifter twist, and I’ll absolutely be diving into the rest of the ORCA series!
