Review: The Husband Experience

The Husband Experience

The Husband Experience by Maya Jean

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A sun-soaked, heartfelt novella where pretending turns into something beautifully real and vulnerable.

Elijah Ruiz takes on what seems like a simple assignment: act as the “husband” to Colby Smith, a widower trying to navigate grief and rebuild his life. What starts as a professional contract soon becomes so much more as the two men discover unexpected connection, emotional healing, and a tender kind of love neither anticipated.

The age gap and their different emotional stages add complexity to their relationship. Elijah’s shy, careful nature perfectly balances Colby’s gentle but determined warmth. Their growing attraction feels earned and genuine, with plenty of sweet, vulnerable moments that don’t rely on over-the-top drama.

Colby’s loss is a meaningful undercurrent that adds real emotional weight. Watching him slowly open up, supported by Elijah’s steady presence, made the romance feel deeper and more satisfying. The Floridian coast, fireworks, and butterfly gardens offer a lovely, light backdrop that contrasts with the characters’ inner struggles, creating a hopeful, healing atmosphere.

Elijah’s role as a “fake husband” comes with its complications, but the story treats his choices thoughtfully. The shift from professional to personal is gradual and believable, avoiding clichés or rushed feelings. For a novella, the story packs a lot of emotional punch and manages to give both characters satisfying arcs despite the shorter length.

Because the book is under 40,000 words, some plot points and emotional beats wrap up quickly. I wanted a bit more time to see how Elijah and Colby’s relationship might evolve beyond the immediate story. Elijah’s willingness to set aside his PhD plans and dive headfirst into a new life felt a little too easy, which slightly challenged my suspension of disbelief. The focus is firmly on Elijah and Colby, which is lovely, but I did miss some richer context or supporting cast to deepen the world and add texture to their lives.

This is a perfect read for anyone who enjoys fake relationship romances with a tender, emotional core and respectful handling of grief. It’s a low-drama, character-driven novella with authentic, slow-burn heat and a feel-good summer vibe with depth and heart.
