Review: The Husband Experience

The Husband Experience

The Husband Experience by Maya Jean

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A sun-soaked, heartfelt novella where pretending turns into something beautifully real and vulnerable.

Elijah Ruiz takes on what seems like a simple assignment: act as the “husband” to Colby Smith, a widower trying to navigate grief and rebuild his life. What starts as a professional contract soon becomes so much more as the two men discover unexpected connection, emotional healing, and a tender kind of love neither anticipated.

The age gap and their different emotional stages add complexity to their relationship. Elijah’s shy, careful nature perfectly balances Colby’s gentle but determined warmth. Their growing attraction feels earned and genuine, with plenty of sweet, vulnerable moments that don’t rely on over-the-top drama.

Colby’s loss is a meaningful undercurrent that adds real emotional weight. Watching him slowly open up, supported by Elijah’s steady presence, made the romance feel deeper and more satisfying. The Floridian coast, fireworks, and butterfly gardens offer a lovely, light backdrop that contrasts with the characters’ inner struggles, creating a hopeful, healing atmosphere.

Elijah’s role as a “fake husband” comes with its complications, but the story treats his choices thoughtfully. The shift from professional to personal is gradual and believable, avoiding clichés or rushed feelings. For a novella, the story packs a lot of emotional punch and manages to give both characters satisfying arcs despite the shorter length.

Because the book is under 40,000 words, some plot points and emotional beats wrap up quickly. I wanted a bit more time to see how Elijah and Colby’s relationship might evolve beyond the immediate story. Elijah’s willingness to set aside his PhD plans and dive headfirst into a new life felt a little too easy, which slightly challenged my suspension of disbelief. The focus is firmly on Elijah and Colby, which is lovely, but I did miss some richer context or supporting cast to deepen the world and add texture to their lives.

This is a perfect read for anyone who enjoys fake relationship romances with a tender, emotional core and respectful handling of grief. It’s a low-drama, character-driven novella with authentic, slow-burn heat and a feel-good summer vibe with depth and heart.

Review: Prodigal

Prodigal Prodigal by Avril Ashton
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An intense, layered M/M romance full of secrets, second chances, and slow-burning tension that simmers just beneath the surface.

Gideon Winters has been presumed dead for fifteen years, but he’s never stopped watching, never stopped waiting. Once a boy on the run from a brutal past, he’s now a calculated man with one mission: reclaim the position that was stolen from him and dismantle the corrupt system he once called home—The Council. When a routine retrieval turns into a rescue, he finds himself entangled with André Tesfaye, a quiet, grounded man who’s as much a mystery to Gideon as he is a balm to his soul.

Their connection is instant but not easy—haunted by trust issues, betrayal, and the violence that follows Gideon like a shadow. Yet in the stillness between storms, a bond begins to form. There’s something beautifully fragile in how André pushes back against Gideon’s walls without trying to fix him. He sees the broken parts but doesn’t flinch.

Review: Black & White

Black & White Black & White by Vinni George
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Grumpy orca shifter meets chaos gremlin hacker in a clever, low-angst fated mates romance with a splash of danger.

This book was a fun surprise! Nero, the stoic orca shifter bounty hunter, is the ultimate grump—and I loved watching him slowly unravel thanks to Felix, the brilliant, snarky hacker who suddenly finds himself part of a shifter world he never expected. Their dynamic is sweet, full of banter and awkward tension, and honestly kind of adorable.

The plot had great pacing, balancing action and shifter-world intrigue with relationship development. I especially loved the found family vibes from Nero’s team—the camaraderie, protectiveness, and dry humor made the book feel like a cozy supernatural heist movie.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because I wanted more heat or emotional punch in the romance. Their bond was clear, but the chemistry sometimes felt soft when I was craving a little more spark or angst.

Still, this was such a fun read with a unique shifter twist, and I’ll absolutely be diving into the rest of the ORCA series!

Review: Tall Again

Tall Again Tall Again by Zoe Caswell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A tender, introspective sapphic romance about grief, growth, and second chances.

This story took its time—and I appreciated that. Mo’s grief felt real, not rushed or romanticized. Her emotional journey through the redwoods was beautifully written and layered with quiet strength. Aspen was the perfect contrast—rooted, patient, and just as in need of something more.

The setting? Absolutely stunning. The way the forest was woven into the healing arc gave the whole book a peaceful, almost meditative vibe. I found myself pausing just to breathe in the atmosphere Caswell created.

I docked a star because the pacing lagged in a few places, and there were moments where I wanted a bit more dialogue or chemistry spark—but overall, this was a gentle, grounded romance that hit all the emotional notes.

Recommended for: readers who love slow burns, introspective character growth, sapphic love stories, and emotionally rich nature writing.
