Triggers Ahead!
Trigger warnings- As authors we all hear these words. We are told that to publish we have to mark every little thing that makes our book- well our book. But what is a trigger? The list is as varied as it is personal. What triggers me may not trigger you, or the guy down the road. So how do we choose? How do we keep from making the dreaded trigger warning mistake?
The truth? Well, we can't, but perhaps having an understanding of what may trigger an audience today, can help you to know where you stand in the genres you write. A personal rule of thumb is to keep it broad. If a book contains assaults of any kind, whether on the page or implied, try a simple Violence trigger warning. If the book has open door sex but isn't erotica, state 18+ and Strong Sexual Situations.
By keeping the range broad you allow the readers the warning, without giving away what may be key plot points. The point of reading is to be immersed, to be surprised, and dare I say it- pushed beyond our own imaginations into the realm of the writer's sometimes twisted and unexpected worlds. Take care and be sure your books are properly categorized, and many triggers are demystified.
In a way to help Haney Hayes Promotions has gathered a list of possible triggers that may help you to decide just where you're lines are and when or if you are crossing someone else's. This is not a full list-as I said it varies, but these are a good place to start!
